Honouring his work on addiction treatment, Google is celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Herbert David Kleber’s election to the National Academy of Medicine with a doodle.

Kleber was an American psychiatrist and substance abuse researcher. He was the founder and head of the Drug Dependence Unit at Yale University, where he also worked as Professor of Psychiatry. He also worked as the Deputy Director for Demand Reduction at the Office of National Drug Control Policy in the White House. He died in 2018.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 19 June, 1934. Kleber changed the landscape of addiction treatment, allowing patients to be diagnosed and treated rather than shamed, and saving countless lives in the process.

According to Google, volunteering for the United States Public Health Service in 1964, Kleber was assigned to a prison hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, where thousands of inmates were being treated for addiction. Noticing that the vast majority of patients would relapse shortly after release, he began to develop a new approach.

Describing his method as “evidence-based treatment", Kleber viewed addiction as a medical condition as opposed to a moral failure, Google said.

Rather than punishing or shaming patients, as many of his predecessors in the field had done, Kleber stressed the importance of research, helping keep many patients on the road to recovery and avoiding relapse through the careful use of medication and therapeutic communities.

During his 50-year career, Kleber authored several articles, wrote important books, and mentored numerous other medical professionals in the field of addiction treatment.
